Ingredient # 4: Open Up

During my first year in College, I really find it hard to open up at first. Well, I believe that the reason I had a hard time in openig up and having friends is because of our different backgrounds in terms of the environment at school.

I came from a very conservative Chinese family and studied in a Chinese school. Therefore, most of my classmates are Chinese. We have many things in common and share different informations that we all know (Chinese thingys). Going to a school where people are different from the way that you got used to is a big challenge for me to keep up with.

The thing is: no matter how different people can be, there would always a small thing that you’ll both have in common. And you can further color the rest of the picture by starting with that small piece. I did it, and the rest was a glorious history.

Believe me, the starting point in buliding a relationship and connection with others is simply opening up. Open a conversation and from there, the connection continues on and as your conversation goes deeper, the more thing you’ll be learning from that person.

Starting a conversation with someone would never affect your pride. There would come a point in your life where you need to stand up for yourself and let others see you. When the right time comes, you’ll know what to do.
