Habit Two: Begin with the End in Mind

When I was young, I usually wondered what would my life be when I grow up, and where would I be afterlife. As what my family and friends said, I was so mature when it comes to thinking that kind of stuff for kids at my age. But seriously, I was really curious during those ages. My curiosity began to shrink as soon as I learned to live my life and have fun. I told myself: “hey, why would I think of such hard and complicated things instead of just HAVE FUN?”  Then I realized now that life is not just about having fun, it’s all about learning. Now, if I would be given the chance to bring back time and change my perception on things, I would have thought of it differently.

Why would I think of such complicated things instead of just doing it and making it happen the way I want it to be?” That would be a better perception of living life. Not just having fun. Habit one taught me this. Being proactive taught me that you make your own life, and not the people around you. While habit two on the other hand taught me that ‘that life’ is important so you have to make the most out of it.

What does it mean to begin with the end in mind? Well, I realized in this habit that your decisions from yesterday, and today would surely affect what your life would be tomorrow. Probably during my childhood days, I just used to think to have fun and nothing more. My mindset was “It’s okay to have fun, I’m still young.” Because of ‘having too much fun’, I was not able to begin with the end in mind by thinking what would be the consequence of it. And soon, there it was, I was not having good grades. Passed yes, but it is still not enough. I forgot that education is far more important than any fun in the world.

Fortunately, that experience opened my eyes and made me realize how important education is, I began to think with the end in mind and found myself more effective. Now, I can say that I have this goal that I wanted to achieve. I am proud to say that I am on the right track. Being proactive says that you own your life, while beginning with the end in mind says that start making it. I’m not saying that education is totally the one that can bring you to success, but it is a big factor.

The book says that beginning with the end in mind is based on the principle that all things are created twice. “You work in your mind until you get a clear image of what you want to build.” How are things created twice? Of course upon creating things, you would actually plan it first before actually implement it. In making real life decisions, the purpose of it is to actually think if it would result to a better living or not.

“All things are created twice.” What would begin with the end in mind has to do with business?  “If you want to have a successful enterprise, you clearly define what you’re trying to accomplish. Upon reading this article, I remembered our marketing subject last semester when we were asked to read some articles that well-known marketers wrote and make a blog out of what we’ve learned from it. One of the articles was from Theodore Levitt who said that one of the main reasons why businesses fail is because of their wrong classification of their own business. He even cited some examples such as movie industry instead of being an entertainment, and railroad instead of being in transportation. Erroneous thoughts of your own business might lead to its destruction. That is one thing that I learned from him.

In applying it in real-life situation where you would be doing your own business, you first need to know what the business’ purpose is upon doing it: if your business wants to provide charity works, or provide customer satisfaction on services, or the likes. You should also determine which target market your business is in to so that it would be easier for you to meet different objectives.

Habit two is also based on the principles of personal leadership. Many people confuse leadership as management. Well they are totally different. “Management is doing things right, while leadership is doing the right things” Leadership is the one that needs to be developed first in order for you to be able to manage well on certain things. When you are able to grasp what the real meaning of leadership is, then that is the only time that you would be an effective leader in managing people through success.

People often misunderstood leadership from management because of the said management paradigm where people thinks too much of controlling instead of having a purpose, and direction. I remembered during my high school days, I also had some experience regarding management paradigm where our leader in the group didn’t want anything but to obey the rules. She is too much focused on controlling us that she even forgot to ask our opinions of whether what the decision should be. She forgot the real meaning of “teamwork.” That is why when our group had some problems, there was nothing to blame but her. At that time, I learned how teamwork is important in attaining success. She was not able to see how teamwork should be. That is why our group had some problems.

In beginning with the end in mind, it is advised that you write your own personal mission statement where you would write all the things that you want to accomplish, as well as what you want to be in the future. Then, I realized how important planning things are and how it contributes to your success. But in order for you to write your goals, you must first have to know yourself better.

On our organizational behavior book, we had some self-assessments where we were asked to answer some questions and the result would help us know ourselves better. Upon answering those, I found myself being on the conscientiousness type of person where the reasons were being responsible, achievement-oriented, and organized. Then, I asked myself, if I was to answer those same questions before I learned to be responsible from my mistakes and experiences in life, would my result still be the same? I think it would be totally different.

I was able to become a better and effective person the moment I began to think what I would want to attain in the future. Beginning to think at the end in mind made me feel that a person, no matter how poor was his decisions and actions in the past has still the chance to improve and change it in the present. Change was never a big word, what makes it hard is people’s fear of making it happen. Upon making it happen, one could already view the beauty of life where life before was totally different from now.

Upon searching out on what center is my personality in, I found out that I was in the work- centered. Work-centeredness explained further why I’m not comfortable if I’m not doing anything, or why I prefer to have something to do. Being “work-a-holic” made me think if it is good. Because from what the book says, it sounded like work-a-holics usually forget their family and social life for their job. They tend to sacrifice those because they are work-oriented people.

Then I asked myself, do I think that kind of centeredness would bring me to success in the future? In work area: yes, but what about my other life? The life that I should have separated my work from. Would I want to sacrifice my social, emotional and family life just for work? By thinking ahead, I could still change the way I see things. Beginning with the end in mind would help a person in shaping up his behavior and actions into a better one. By thinking that way, one would be able to make others realize how meaningful life can be if you would just use it prudently.
